This is an impressive short story that narrates the author’s autobiographical experiences in a flat tone.
Akashi, known as Bankara, dominates all the students in his school because he is the son of a gang leader and is considered the toughest student in the school. One day, he threatened members of the rugby team by pointing a sword at their eyes, saying, "Win by all means, or kill yourself." He also bullies weaker boys by tearing their clothes off.
He is still an innocent young boy with many facets to his personality. He enjoys manga and takes care of a student named Tezuka, who excels at drawing manga (after all, manga can be more powerful than weapons). Occasionally, he is charming enough to buy a souvenir for Kumiko, a girl who appears in Tezuka’s manga work.
The exchange between Tezuka, who continues to create manga despite it being prohibited during wartime, and Akashi, who strives to encourage and support him, offers readers hope and inspiration to pursue their dreams.
1973/01 Serialized in Bessatsu Shonen Jump (Shueisha)
This is one of his autobiographical manga works, loved by many readers. This reflects on his youth during World War II. While it includes some fictional elements, it effectively conveys anti-war messages by depicting the lives of Japanese people and the tragedy experienced by special attack pilots during that era.
