STORY

One day, a boy living in the mountain village, who has been feeling depressed due to his parents’ divorce, spots a young Japanese serow trapped and unable to move as getting stuck between the logs of a rope bridge.
The boy calls the cub Korosuke and takes care of it. He brings food to the bridge to feed him, cleans up his droppings, and even covers him with a plastic sheet on rainy days.

DESCRIPTIONS

1978/02/19 Appeared in Shukan Shonen Sunday (Shogakukan)

Korosuke is a young Japanese serow, an endemic species to Japan that lives naturally in the wild.
The serow used to be a common animal hunted for sport, but in modern times it has been designated as a Special Natural Monument. By the 1970s, when this work was written, its population had recovered, and in some regions it was even regarded as an animal that damaged forests.
