MANGAMANGA

STORY

The story is a shōjo manga with a touch of mystery, featuring a young detective named Pako-chan. Pako-chan, a third-grade girl who always wears a large ribbon, is quite an unusual child. She has never felt fear; whether she’s walking along a high fence or having a big truck drive very close to her, she remains unafraid. Even when faced with a large dog, she shows no fear, ultimately winning the dog over to become her loyal companion!

DESCRIPTIONS

When someone says they don’t understand the feeling of “fear,” it reminds us of the well-known Astro Boy, who once said something similar. However, unlike the robot Astro Boy, the heroine of this “Kokeshi Detective Agency” is an ordinary girl. One might worry that she is reckless and unsafe, but Paco-chan is both brave and highly intelligent. Her decisiveness and ability to take action are on par with adults, if not better.
In addition, with help from her older brother Taro—who somewhat resembles the author Osamu Tezuka—and her “retainer,” a dog named Mōru, she not only remains unfazed in frightening situations but often ends up praised or making new friends. It is, in a way, enviable how every story concludes happily.
Because this work is classified as shōjo manga, even when incidents and villains appear—elements essential to mystery stories—the action and suspense are kept relatively mild. While this makes it comfortable and easy to read, those who enjoy more serious, full-fledged mystery stories may find it somewhat lacking. However, this gentle and warm atmosphere is precisely what gives the work its unique charm, both as a mystery and as a shōjo manga.
