STORY

This volume is a collection of Tezuka Osamu's book reviews: here, Tezuka Osamu writes about literature he himself has read. To understand the meaning behind Tezuka Osamu's body of works, it is probably important to know that he had a particularly voracious taste for Russian literature, such as that penned by Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, rather than British and American literature. A theme present in all of Tezuka Osamu's works, not only in his epics such as "The Phoenix" but also in Manga aimed at younger audiences including "Astro Boy," "Jungle Emperor Leo," "Blue Triton," and so on, is his constant pursuit of the question of "what it means to be human," an undercurrent which undoubtedly stems from his having been influenced by Russian literature. Tezuka Osamu also reveals here that Bernhard Kellerman's "The Tunnel," which he considered to be the best in the genre of science fiction, was the inspiration for his later work entitled "Marine Express." Tezuka Osamu's fans are sure to find this collection of great interest.
