STORY

A group of animals went picnicking in the woods together. A boy elephant, Ele-chan, led the way, but he went so deep into the woods that the other animals began to worry about getting lost. Ele-chan, on the other hand, assured everybody with complete confidence that "I can smell the way back". "I have such a great nose!" Ele-chan flattered himself. But when he tried to drink hot soup, he burned his precious nose very badly. So, in place of Ele-chan, Wan-chan, the dog smelled the right way back, and everybody came out of the woods safely.

DESCRIPTIONS

Tezuka Osamu describes this common trait among children, to show off new toys or boast about pretty ribbons, using cute animals. Ele-chan, who is proud of having the longest nose, gets himself into a terrible situation because he is over confident. This story conveys the same moral as the Japanese senryu (poem) "The boughs that bear most hang lowest".
