STORY

When Suzu-chan, the bell cricket tinkled her bell, all the insects in town felt happy, and never minded having to do a hard day's work. Suzu-chan was also pleased to know that her music made people happy. One day, she received an invitation to a concert in a castle. It said that the most brilliant music performer would get to live in the castle. Suzu-chan was forced to compete with grasshoppers and other insects, but she won first prize. Then she started to live in the castle as a princess, and tinkled her bell everyday. But she felt very lonely because she could not see her town's people. They also missed her music so much that they finally decided to get Suzu-chan back from the castle...

DESCRIPTIONS

This is a wonderful story for children, and is just like one of Aesop's fables. While the theme of the story is the importance of music, how music fills our hearts with joy, and how indispensable music is in our lives, the cute animals are also charmingly illustrated. At the end of the story, Tezuka dutifully added an explanatory note saying, "The leading character is a female bell cricket, but in fact only male crickets tinkle their bells". Here, we get a glimpse of his great enthusiasm for insects.
