Outline of the Exhibition

 

Shinichi Hoshi (1926 – 1997) made a debut with a work titled “Sekisutora” in 1957. The work was originally released in a science fiction fan magazine titled Uchujin, and later reprinted in a magazine titled Hoseki. Hoshi became to attract a lot of attention as a new comer in Japanese Sci-Fi world with his innovative and urbanized style. He continued to create a lot of works and established his own style called “Short-Short” in which he focused on the essence of stories without setting any time or manner.

At the exhibition, his hand-written manuscript, idea notes and favorite things are displayed in order to help visitors understand attraction of his works. Also the exhibition introduces some unexpected similarities between Hoshi and Tezuka, two authors who established the new genres respectively, Short-Short and Story Manga.

Adult 700 yen (560 yen)/Junior High Schooler and High Schooler 300 yen (240 yen)/Elementary Schooler 100 yen (80 yen). *For group with 10 people or more, the amount in ( ) is applied.

The 1st Event: Talk Show “Dream Maker” by Marina Hoshi and Masahiko Inouoe

 

Marina Hoshi, the second daughter of Shinichi Hoshi, and Masahiko Inoue, an author who made a debut from Shinichi Hoshi Short-Short Contest, hold a talk show. They talk about Shinichi Hoshi from their respective view points to introduce his attraction.

Marina Hoshi Whyte

Marina Hoshi was born as the second daughter of Shinichi Hoshi in 1963 in Tokyo. While in Aoyma Gakuin University, she won All Nippon Student Surfing Competition four times in a row. After graduating from the university, she moved to Hawaii. Now she is the President of Hoshi Library, managing Shinichi Hoshi’s copyrighted properties. She is also a mother of two children.

 

Masahiko Inoue

Masahiko Inoue, born in 1960 in Tokyo, made a debut with “Yokeinamonoga”. the work received Honorable Work Prize at Shinichi Hoshi Short-Short Contest.Later, “Igyohakurankai” (Kadokawa Publishing), a book contained the prize-winning novel, became to attract a lot of attention. He also received Special Award of the 19th Nippon SF Taisho Award with an anthology titled “Igyo Collection”, which he planned and supervised by himself (Kosaido/Kobunsha).

 

 

The 2nd Event: Yu Esaka’s “How to write Short-Short”

 

Yu Esaka, an author and the best pupil of Shinichi Hoshi, introduces the method to write Short-short which he directly learned from Sinichi Hoshi in an understandable way.

Yu Esaka:

Yu Esaka, born in 1953 in Osaka, graduated from Waseda University. He made a debut with a work titled “Hanabi”, which was given the best award of Shinichi Hoshi Short-Short Contest ‘80 among 6831 works applied. Then he consecutively published his lyrical and witty works in such magazines as Short-ShortLand and In Pocket.His major works included Shikake Hanabi, Mijikaiyoru no Dekigoto, Hinekure Item, and Kagiana Labyrinth. He also edited a collection of Shinichi Hoshi’s classic works titled “Short-Short Yuenchi” (a total of 5 volumes from Juritsusha) as well as “Star Words – 150 best phrases by Shinishi Hoshi (Juritsusha).

*Each event will be held at Atom Vision in Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum.
