TOMM the 17th Exhibition: The Best Five Tezuka Manga – in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of TOMM -

(1999/04/29)

Period: April 29, 1999 – September 7, 1999
Venue: Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum

The year 1999 is the 5th anniversary of Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum as well as the 70th anniversary of Tezuka Osamu.

Tezuka Osamu authored approximately 700 manga titles, 150,000 sheets of manuscripts, during his career. He also produced no less than 60 animation works. Indeed, “Genius” is the term appropriate to describe a man like Tezuka Osamu who produced a lot of high-quality works, and this exhibition approaches to such Tezuka’s works from two aspects: quality and quantity.

As the first attempt for this commemorative exhibition, 250 colored cover arts by Tezuka’s hand among 400 pieces drawn for Tezuka Osamu Manga Collections are displayed at once. What’s remarkable is those cover arts are “colored” while manga exhibits are black and white in most cases. Visitors can also understand how prolific Tezuka was as a manga artist thorough those cover arts which represent the stories he created for respective works.

The exhibition also focuses on the most popular five works chosen in fan balloting; Astro Boy, Jungle Emperor, Princess Knight, Phoenix and Black Jack. By presenting examples that such works have been adapted into different medium, including live-action, TV program, CM, merchandising、music and more, the exhibition shows the quality of his works which could be exploited as the original for further creations
