The year 2013 is the 40th anniversary of “Black Jack”.  In 1970’s, the time before the serialization, Tezuka was in the middle of a slump and people thought he was on the way out.  Under such circumstance, the chief editor of Shukan Shonen Champion (a weekly comic magazine) decided to start Black Jack as a work only for a short-time serialization and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Tezuka’s manga artist. The work, however, became popular among people, and the serialization lasted for nearly a half decade.  And Tezuka regained his popularity with the work.

“Black Jack Sosaku Hiwa –Teukza Osamu no Shogotoba kara-“ (Untold Story behind the Creation of Black Jack- from Tezuka’s studio-) (original story: Momoru Miyazaki, manga: Koji Yoshimoto) is a work based on the stories told by about 30 people who worked together with Tezuka then, including editors and assistants. Tezuka’s enthusiasm and power to create better works are well-depicted in the work.

This exhibition, mainly consisting of the manuscripts of “Black Jack Sosaku Hiwa” and “Black Jack” and derivative works based on “Black Jack”, introduces what Osamu Tezuka really was.
