  • TOMM the 28th Exhibition: Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom In double commemoration of the renovation of the Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum and the birth of Atom

  •

    Place: Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum
    Time: March 1, 2003 - June 24, 2003
    Theme
On April 7, 2003 at the renovated museum, Atom finally will have "the moment of his birth."
In the same month, a new animated TV series Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom will start a nationwide broadcast on Fuji Network System. The series portrays a world where humans and robots coexist / conflict in a parallel world called Metro City.
As a bipedal robot sends the media into a frenzy in real life, the "robot society" that Tezuka Osamu drew in his comics and animation is no longer just a fantasy.
As you know, Tetsuwan Atom was a very significant work for Tezuka Osamu. Started as a comic series in 1952, it was made into an animated TV series in 1963. This was Japan's first animated TV series and was aired worldwide, giving Tezuka Osamu international recognition. A new animated TV series was made in 1980, so the work remained in the public eye and has continued been loved for many years.
This special exhibition is to celebrate Atom's birth by exhibiting materials from the new series, Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom, and showing footage from the previous two series. Enjoy meeting a new Atom who is more powerful than ever.
    Exhibition Components
This special exhibition is divided into three components. One is the Entrance, where "the moment of Atom's birth" is reenacted. Another is the First Section, entitled "Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom - Atom's new awakening," which introduces the new TV series Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom of the 21st century with animation cels, storyboards, and the like. The last is the Second Section entitled "The Beginning of Tetsuwan Atom," which includes screenings of footage from the past two TV series, giving all Atom fans, both parents and children, plenty to talk about.
Entrance: Reenacting "the moment of Atom's birth"
Through the entrance into the special exhibition, there spreads before your eyes a view of the lab where Atom was born. Proceeding into the area, you find a space covered with grass where Atom is lying on the point of awakening. In this space celebrating Atom's birthday (April 7th), background music starts at certain times of the day and Atom's awakening begins as he slowly sits up. This reenactment of "the moment of Atom's birth" will be held on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays from March 1, 2003 to April 6, 2003 (the day before his birthday) and every day from April 7, 2003.
First Section "Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom - Atom's new awakening"
A new animated TV series, Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom, will be on the air from this April. This is the third animated series of Tetsuwan Atom following the series of 1962 and 1980. The title of the new series is Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom. Atom performs great exploits in a world where robots with hearts like Atom are created one after another, believing "humans and robots can be friends." In this section, the world of Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom is presented using about 50 pieces of material actually used in the pilot film and the series, including the project book, scripts, storyboards and animation cels. The conception of the world of the series is illustrated, and images and lines spoken by the main characters are presented to provide basic information about the series and aid enjoyment when watching it on TV. In addition, footage from Astro Boy / Tetsuwan Atom is shown on a monitor.
Second Section "The Beginning of Tetsuwan Atom"
A boy robot, Atom, who first appeared in the comic Captain Atom in 1951, appealed to many readers even though he was a secondary character. As a result, the comic Tetsuwan Atom, with Atom as its leading character, started serialization in 1952. In 1962, Japan's first animated TV series Tetsuwan Atom started and created an Atom boom with a phenomenal viewing record, with average ratings of 30%. The series was also aired worldwide with the title Astro Boy, and this gave Tezuka Osamu international recognition. In this section, the 1962 black and white series, Tetsuwan Atom, and the 1980 color series, Tetsuwan Atom, are both shown on two separate monitors. In addition, graphic panels show how popular both series were, and the main characters from the early comic Tetsuwan Atom are presented for comparison with the main characters introduced in the First Section.
